Where the money actually goes

A fair question: if a project is billed at a given rate, what actually reaches me? As a Belgian sole trader the headline figure is not the take-home. Here is roughly how every €100 of billed work splits before anything lands in my pocket.

€28 NET / €100
  • Income tax (current year) €2525%
  • Social contributions €1818%
  • Pension savings (PLCI/EIP) €88%
  • Sick-leave & income buffer €66%
  • Software licenses €55%
  • Travel (non-remote) €44%
  • Accountant, insurance, tools €66%
  • Net, in my pocket €2828%

In plain terms: a €75/hour billed rate is roughly €21/hour once tax, social contributions, pension, reserves, licenses and travel are set aside. Indicative figures for a Belgian indépendant, not accounting advice.

note / Travel

What the travel rate covers

On-site travel is billed at the official Belgian mileage rate, not a markup. The €0.4449 per kilometre is a single line that already covers everything it costs to put a car on the road.

0,4449 €/km
  • Fuel 30%
  • Vehicle depreciation 25%
  • Maintenance and tyres 20%
  • Insurance 15%
  • Road taxes 10%

The rate follows the federal mileage allowance, indexed yearly. It bundles fuel, wear, insurance, taxes and the slow loss of the car's value into one fair figure, so there is no separate travel markup on top.
